The Lighthouse Ministry Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation, established as a faith-based Christian outreach to the children and youth of the city of Salem, New Jersey, and to the greater Salem County area. Its purpose is to provide recreational and educational developmental programs, to develop constructive relationships, to provide responsible Christian role models and mentors, with the goal of presenting the claims of Jesus Christ and his gospel to Salem area youth and to their families. We aim to fulfill our mission currently through the following activities: Olive Street Community Garden- Opportunity for Adults and Teens to mentor and work with Salem City children, teaching about gardening and nutrition: Grow together at our garden on Olive Street. Enjoy the beautiful Ann C. Campbell Garden house space diagonal to the garden at 67 Union Street. Produce from the garden is free for participants and the community. Surplus produce is placed on a sidewalk stand outside of the garden for anyone to take. Adult garden help is needed in the spring and fall. Ann C. Campbell Garden House Groups- Gatherings at the “Garden House” include Women’s Neighborhood Fellowship, Amigas Latinas/English language learning and cultural experience sharing, Chrysalis Girls’ Club, After School Spring and Fall Garden Club, Art events, and other youth activities. Summer Garden Crew and College Interns- Opportunities for youth ages 13+ to join Root and Seed Crew to participate in summer leadership work in the garden from mid-June-August. Seed Crew Members are first year gardeners in middle school and high school. Root Crew members are returning high school students. Garden Crew provides an opportunity to learn important job skills, about growing food through maintenance of the garden, and to try new fresh foods. High School graduate and College student paid positions (mid-May to August) are a part of our summer leadership for garden and camps. Lighthouse Learning Center- Opportunity for Adults and High School students to work one-on-one with elementary school students from Salem City: Tutor in basic reading after school at the First Presbyterian Church on Market Street from November to March on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 3-4:30pm. City Lights- Opportunity for Youth ages 13+ to Serve and Lead local community outreaches: Be a Light in Salem City while helping with food distributions, clean-up projects, tutoring, summer day camps, and other Lighthouse programs. Project Restore- “Building Community while Repairing Homes” -Project Restore is a youth home repair program for Salem City homeowners started in 2018. One week during the summer, adult volunteers along with youth ages 13+ work on basic home repair projects to make homes warmer, safer, drier, and healthier. Projects, such as installing and repairing fences, replacing porch boards, building new stairs and railings, installing flooring, installing wall and ceiling drywall, painting, sealing windows and doors, and cleaning up yards and streets have been completed. Lighthouse Summer Day Camps Lighthouse offers free summer day camps for Salem City youth ages 7-11. At the Olive Street Community Garden and Ann C. Campbell Garden House, children enjoy indoor and outdoor space for Nature Exploration Camp and Fun with Food Camp (nutrition and cooking) which include art and physical activity.
